Cale Makar scored in the second period, and Scott Wedgewood delivered a 22-save shutout as the visiting Colorado Avalanche edged the Chicago Blackhawks 1–0 on Sunday night for their ninth straight victory.
The game’s only goal came at 18:21 of the second period, when Chicago goaltender Spencer Knight mishandled the puck behind the net. The miscue led to a Tristen Nielsen attempt from the right circle, and Makar — trailing the play — collected the long rebound in the left circle before beating Knight with a wrist shot.
Wedgewood was sharp throughout, particularly in the first period, when he stopped 11 shots and turned away multiple high-danger chances on his way to his first shutout of the season and Colorado’s second in as many nights.
Chicago was blanked for the first time this season but stayed competitive behind Knight’s 25-save effort. Ryan Donato and Ryan Greene each finished with four shots on goal.
Sabres 4, Hurricanes 1
Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 29 saves, and four different skaters found the net as Buffalo rolled past Carolina for its fourth win in five games.
Alex Tuch, Jack Quinn, Beck Malenstyn, and Tage Thompson each scored. Luukkonen stopped all 24 shots he faced in the second and third periods.
Carolina’s lone goal came from Shayne Gostisbehere, while Frederik Andersen made 17 saves. The East-leading Hurricanes saw their five-game point streak snapped.

Jesper Wallstedt recorded 32 saves for his third shutout of the season — and fourth in 13 career starts — as visiting Minnesota beat Winnipeg for its fifth straight victory.
Danila Yurov and Brock Faber scored in the second period, and Kirill Kaprizov added his team’s co-leading 13th goal in the third. Minnesota now leads the league with five shutouts.
Eric Comrie made 27 saves, and Mark Scheifele appeared in his 900th career NHL game. Winnipeg has dropped six of its past nine.
Islanders 1, Kraken 0 (SO)
Kyle Palmieri scored the deciding shootout goal as the New York Islanders edged the Seattle Kraken in Elmont, N.Y., picking up their seventh win in nine games.
It was the first NHL game this season to remain scoreless through regulation and overtime, and the Islanders’ first 1–0 shootout victory since Nov. 24, 2014. Bo Horvat also converted in the shootout, while David Rittich made 19 saves in regulation and stopped one of two attempts in the shootout.
Seattle’s Freddy Gaudreau scored the opening shootout goal, and Joey Daccord made 34 saves. The scoreless tie through regulation was the first in Kraken history.
Sharks 3, Bruins 1
Macklin Celebrini posted a goal and an assist, and Yaroslav Askarov stopped 34 shots to lead San Jose past visiting Boston.
Celebrini scored midway through the second period for the eventual game-winner, extending the 19-year-old’s point streak to five games. Shakir Mukhamadullin and Collin Graf added goals as the Sharks secured their third win in four outings.
Morgan Geekie scored for Boston, and Jeremy Swayman made 28 saves. The Bruins outshot San Jose 35–31 but fell to 2–4–0 in their last six.
Flames 5, Canucks 2
