Eight children killed in Louisiana shooting rampage

A deadly shooting rampage in Shreveport, Louisiana, left eight children dead and multiple others injured Sunday in what authorities described as a devastating domestic violence incident.

The violence began shortly after 6 a.m. local time, when a gunman opened fire on a woman at one residence, seriously injuring her. Authorities said the suspect then traveled to a second home, where the situation escalated dramatically.

At that location, eight children — ranging in age from approximately 12 months to 14 years old — were killed. Another adult woman was seriously injured, and a teenager sustained injuries described as non-life-threatening.

After the attack, the suspect fled the scene, hijacking a vehicle at gunpoint. Shreveport police quickly identified the individual and initiated a pursuit. The chase ended in neighboring Bossier Parish, where officers opened fire, killing the suspect at the scene.

Because the suspect died during an encounter with law enforcement, the Louisiana State Police have launched an investigation into the officer-involved shooting. The Shreveport Police Department is leading the investigation into the earlier attacks.

Authorities have not officially released the suspect’s name, though it has circulated widely on social media and in some reports. Police indicated the individual was related to the children who were killed.

In a statement, the Shreveport Police Department described the incident as “a tragic domestic violence incident” that resulted in “a catastrophic and heartbreaking loss of young lives.”

“At this time, investigators have confirmed that eight children, ranging in age from approximately one to fourteen years old, were killed inside a residence located in the 300 block of West 79th Street during a violent domestic incident,” the department said.

Officials added that “two adult females are currently being treated at a local hospital for serious injuries,” while a teenage victim’s injuries were not considered life-threatening.

According to preliminary findings, the suspect first shot a woman on Harrison Street before traveling to the second residence, where the majority of the victims were found. After fleeing, the suspect carjacked another individual near Linwood Avenue and West 79th Street.

“Shortly after the carjacking, Shreveport Police Department DWI officers located the stolen vehicle and initiated a pursuit,” the statement said. “The pursuit continued into Bossier Parish, where officers ultimately engaged the suspect. Officers were forced to discharge their department-issued firearms, neutralizing the suspect, who was pronounced deceased at the scene.”

Authorities noted that “no wrongdoing is suspected” in the officer-involved shooting and that preliminary information indicates officers acted in accordance with department policy.

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill also addressed the tragedy, writing, “We do not yet know all the details, but I am deeply saddened by the senseless loss of life. I’m praying for the victims and their family members in the wake of this devastating violence.”

Investigators say the case remains ongoing as they work to determine the full circumstances surrounding one of the deadliest domestic violence incidents in the region in recent years.
