Elk Grove Village man sentenced to 16 years in prison for attempted murder

Cameron Ruebusch, a 25-year-old Elk Grove Village man, has been sentenced to 16 years in federal prison for trying to kill a postal carrier in 2018. According to the court documents, Ruebusch shot a postal carrier on December 31, 2018.

Ruebusch approached the USPS vehicle when the mail carrier had recently completed a delivery in the 200 block of West Brantwood Avenue. He tapped on the front passenger side door after reaching the USPS vehicle. The mail carrier drove away after sensing the threat. Ruebusch fired multiple shots when the mail carrier tried to drive away.

As a result of this incident, the mail carrier was wounded. According to the court documents, the wounds did not prove fatal for the mail carrier as he survived. Ruebusch entered a guilty plea last year for his crimes. He admitted in the plea agreement that he knowingly discharged a firearm during a crime of violence and attempted second-degree murder of a US employee.

Matthew F. Kennelly, a US District Judge, sentenced him to 16 years in federal prison on January 8, 2021. Judge Matthew found that Ruebusch obstructed justice by disposing of the gun after the shooting. Ruebusch also asked his friends to lie about his whereabouts to the law enforcement officials. John R. Lausch, Jr., the US attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, and William Hedrick, the inspector-in-charge of the US Postal Inspection in Chicago, announced the sentence.

Chester Choi, a special assistant US attorney, argued in the government’s sentencing memorandum, “Defendant’s actions were brazen, callous, and cowardly, and demonstrated a complete disrespect for the law.” He argued that Ruebusch committed a serious crime of almost killing a USPS employee. The investigation of the crime incident was assisted by the Elk Grove Village Police Department. The defendant will spend 16 years in federal prison for his crimes.
