Microsoft has become the latest tech heavyweight to enact sweeping layoffs, citing rising costs
tied to its aggressive push into artificial intelligence. The company announced this week that it
would eliminate roughly 9,000 jobs—nearly 4 percent of its global workforce—as part of an
effort to streamline operations and control spending.
As of June 2024, Microsoft employed around 228,000 people. The company had already reduced
its workforce in May, cutting approximately 6,000 positions. Last month, Bloomberg News
reported that further job reductions were on the horizon, with a particular focus on sales roles.
The cuts come in the midst of Microsoft’s substantial financial commitment to AI. The company
has pledged $80 billion in capital expenditures for fiscal year 2025, with much of the funding
directed toward scaling AI infrastructure. However, this investment wave has begun to erode
profitability—cloud margins for the June quarter are projected to decline year-over-year.
To mitigate financial strain, Microsoft stated it would “reduce organizational layers with fewer
managers” and simplify its internal structure, including products, roles, and processes.
The Seattle Times was the first to report the news of the layoffs. Meanwhile, Bloomberg News
reported that Microsoft’s King division in Barcelona—best known for the Candy Crush mobile
game—will also face reductions, with about 10 percent of its workforce, or roughly 200
employees, set to be cut. The company confirmed to Reuters that the layoffs had affected its
gaming division but emphasized that the majority of the unit remained intact.
Microsoft’s move reflects a broader trend among major tech companies aggressively investing in
AI while also paring down staff. Earlier this year, Meta said it would let go of about 5 percent of
its lowest-rated employees. Alphabet’s Google has laid off hundreds of workers across teams,
and Amazon has cut roles in various divisions, including books, devices, and communications.
Across corporate America, concerns over economic uncertainty and operational costs have
pushed companies to restructure and build leaner organizations. Even tech giants with strong
financials are now balancing innovation with austerity, and Microsoft’s latest decision marks a
clear shift in how the industry is preparing for the next wave of AI transformation.
