The Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) will host two free “Midway Airport Family Night” events this month, offering families an educational introduction to the airport experience. Aimed at easing travel for children and parents, the sessions are designed to make flying less stressful and more enjoyable.
The first event takes place on Saturday, September 13, with sessions running from 3 to 5:30 p.m. and 4 to 6:30 p.m. A second event will be held on Tuesday, September 30, from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Participation is open to children under 18, who must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
“Few experiences are as magical for a child as their first flight — and much of that wonder begins before the plane ever leaves the ground,” said CDA Commissioner Michael McMurray. “At Midway Airport Family Night, we want young travelers and their families to feel that same sense of excitement and confidence as they move through the airport. This event is a chance to explore the journey together — from check-in to boarding — and to show kids that flying isn’t just about the destination, it’s about the adventure of the whole trip.”
Families can register online at FlyChicago.com/Midway or via dedicated Eventbrite pages for each date: September 13 and September 30.
During each session, Midway Airport customer experience specialists will team up with the Transportation Security Administration and airline partners to guide families through airport procedures. Demonstrations will include how to handle milk, juice, medications, food pouches, car seats, and strollers at security checkpoints. The sessions will also cover practical tips on checking baby gear, baggage allowances, and gate-checking strollers.
The CDA hopes the events will give families the tools and confidence they need for future trips, turning the process of flying into a shared adventure rather than a source of stress.
