More Taxes for Illinois?

There could be more taxes for Illinois as gas tax could be more than double if the new legislation is passed. Illinois lawmakers are proposing a new bill which could affect everyone in Illinois. This could happen due to a proposed bill HB3233. This was introduced in the House by Rep. Marcus Evans Jr. and in the Senate by State Senator Martin Sandoval of Chicago.

This bill if passes would double state’s fuel tax and would also increase other fee services as well. This could include driver’s license renewals and license plate and title fees. Mr. Sandoval had defended the proposed bill and said that they are falling behind everyone else. He was talking to Chicago Tribune and said that the key to creating jobs and promoting economy recovery is to keep on investing in the state’s infrastructure.

He also said that “Investment will boost productivity, support business growth, create jobs, and provide a healthier environment and improve opportunity for Illinoisans.” He also said while speaking to another outlet that the gas tax of the state has not been increased since 1990. He says to change that is the key to Illinois’ aging infrastructure.

If the bill is accepted, then it is projected that around $2.4 billion would be collected through changing the gas tax. This money would be invested in transportation projects. This is due to the state’s constitutions so called ‘lockbox amendment’.

There will be a lot of changing in the prices if the bill is accepted. The gas tax on unleaded fuel would increase from 19 cents to 44 cents per gallon. The cost of renewing a license plate in Illinois would go from $99 to $148 per year. The most shocking thing is that registering an electric car in the state would go from $17.50 to $1000.
