Sara Huser launches GoFundMe campaign to free students from ICE detention

Sara Huser, a member of the Illinois Education Association, has initiated a GoFundMe page to raise money. The money will be spent on the fight to free her student from the detention center of the Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Huser worked as a school counselor at Crystal Lake Central High School. Meydi Guzman Rivas, a student of Huser, was taken into custody by the ICE.

Husar said, “We can do better for our students. What is happening to Meydi is wrong.” She told that Meydi escaped her country of Honduras due to the violence there. She called this act of the ICE “unspeakable”. Husar added, “We should wrap our arms around these children.” Rivas is a senior student at Crystal Lake Central High School.

According to the school, she was going to get her graduate degree in May 2020. The ICE took her into custody on October 16. Rivas is currently present in a detention center in Pulaski County in Southern Illinois. Rivas came to the US with her father in 2018. According to the US Government, Rivas and her father missed a court hearing in February.

The ICE officials took Rivas and her father into custody when they appeared in the court in October. They were detained by the ICE for missing the February court hearing. Husar said, “We are raising money to fight for the freedom of Meydi.” She added that she had no political intentions. The local community members and attorneys supported Rivas. Husar said that Meydi still needed money for her court fees and phone to communicate.

Beth Vonau, a Crystal Lake Attorney, said, “We are trying to help a girl who fled her homeland after being gang-raped and told she would become the property of that gang.” He added that she deserved to be graduated with her class in May. Rivas fled her country with her father. Huser has raised $3000 through this campaign and the goal is $5000.
