Chicago is the largest city of Illinois. Often, the political situation here dictates trends throughout the state. And one of the main newsmakers in the city is the Mayor of Chicago Lori Lightfoot. In the spring of 2018, she announced her intention to run for mayor of Chicago, and on May 20, 2019, she took up her new position and became the 56th mayor of Chicago. In this position, she replaced Rahm Emanuel who headed the city from 2011 to 2019.

During the second round of elections, Lori Lightfoot won with 73% of the votes. Mayor of Chicago represents the Democratic Party and is an open representative of the LGBT community. Her spouse Amy Eshleman strongly supported Lightfoot during the election campaign and continues to support her husband’s initiative as mayor.

Lori Lightfoot graduated from the University of Michigan and the University of Chicago. In the period from 1996-2002 held the position of Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois. From 2002 to 2004, she was working as chief administrator of the Chicago Police Department Office of Professional Standards.

Then followed work in various departments of the Chicago administration and several years of private practice. In 2015, Rahm Emanuel appointed Lori Lightfoot as President of the Chicago Police Board.

The mayoral campaign of 2018-2019 was the first in the life of Lori Lightfoot. Moreover, she became the first open lesbian in the history of the election of the mayor of Chicago. In the election, she managed to get around candidates such as Gery Chico, Bill Daily, Susana Mendoza and Toni Preckwinkle.

In her position, Lori Lightfoot regularly starts discussing such essential for the community topics as tax, teacher contract fairness, public safety, and the expansion of the gambling business in Chicago. Mayor of Chicago also tries to resolve the issue of affordable housing in the city. To do this, she created a task force that will look for opportunities to solve this problem.
