Trump puts another barrier for asylum seeking immigrants

Trump administration has placed another barrier for the immigrants trying to seek asylum in the United States. They have placed a new rule for immigrants at southern border, which will require the immigrants to first pursue safe haven in a third country through which they had traveled on the way to the United States.

The Department of Homeland Security have issued a statement with Department of Justice. The statement says that the new rule will set a ‘new bar’ for the immigrants “by placing further restrictions or limitations on eligibility for aliens who seek asylum in the United States.” An outrage was created after the announcement of this rule.

The American Civil Liberties Union has termed the new rule as ‘patently unlawful’. They have also owed to file a lawsuit against this rule. Various host of experts also questioned its legality. Stephen Legomsky, a former chief counsel of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, told Reuters in an email, “The interim regulation violates the clear language of the law in several respects.’’

The United Nations refugee agency UNHCR said that they are deeply concerned about this rule. They said that this rule will make a lot of families at risk and will undermine their international efforts to find a coordinated solution. It has been designated an ‘interim final rule’. The measure will go into effect on Tuesday.

This rule will potentially be shifting the burden onto poorly equipped countries like Mexico and Guatemala to process asylum claims. This will mean that it would be near impossible for the asylum seekers to gain legal entry to the United States as they have to apply asylum in ‘third country’. The new ruling is the recent effort by Trump administration to crack down upon immigration.
