At least 6 people faced breathing problem, possibly vaping-related, in Illinois

At least six people were hospitalized as they faced vaping-related breathing problem in Illinois. The Illinois Department of Public Health said that the breathing problems were possibly related to vaping.

The victims of the breathing problem suffered from chest pains, fatigue, breath shortness, vomiting, and diarrhea. The symptoms were noticed during their stay at the hospital for several days and weeks. Dr. Ngozi Ezike, Director of IDPH, said, “IDPH is working with local health departments and hospitals to investigate reported cases of hospitalized individuals with unexplained respiratory illness and a history of vaping.”

Ezike added that the current cases of respiratory illness showed that there was a potential for immediate health consequences. IDPH has been researching the long-term and short-term effects of vaping. The actual cause of the symptoms and breathing issues is still unknown. IDPH is investigating the chemicals which caused these health problems.

IDPH is trying to find the vaping product which was used by young people. IDPH said that the majority of the cases were reported in northeast Illinois while some cases were reported in St. Louis neighborhood. Apart from 6 hospitalized cases, IDPH is investigating five other cases as well. Officials advised the people to get medical aid if they find it tough to breathe after vaping. Chest pains are also a symptom of vaping-related breathing problems.

Six people have been hospitalized so far due to breathing problem, chest pains, fatigue, and shortness of breath in the recent time in Illinois. Five other cases are also under the observation of IDPH but the victims have not been hospitalized in those cases. IDPH called it a serious outbreak of respiratory disease. They are investigating the actual chemical which caused these health issues.
