Chicago Fire FC and Atlanta United FC battled to a 2-2 draw at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Wednesday night, marking a historic result for Chicago.
Philip Zinckernagel opened the scoring with his 10th goal of the season, giving Chicago an early advantage. The Danish forward wasn’t done — later assisting Maren Haile-Selassie’s goal in the 79th minute, which briefly restored the Fire’s lead.
Atlanta responded in the second half with an equalizer from Alexey Miranchuk, set up by Miguel Almirón. And dramatically, Will Reilly delivered a stoppage-time goal for Atlanta to level the match once again.
The result marked Chicago Fire’s first regular-season point ever at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, after failing to earn any points in their previous seven visits. The last win for Chicago at the venue was during the 2018 U.S. Open Cup Round of 16.
Philip Zinckernagel continues to shine, now totaling 19 goal contributions this season (10 goals, 9 assists), ranking eighth all-time for Chicago in single-season goal involvements. Defender Andrew Gutman also reached a milestone with his eighth assist, setting a personal best for the season.
Attendance for the match was reported at 38,882.
Chicago Fire FC’s next match is set for July 19 against CF Montréal at Stade Saputo. The game will be broadcast globally on MLS Season Pass via Apple TV, and locally through wlsam.com and Que Buena Fire via the Uforia App.
