The method used by US officials to count the deaths came under question in recent weeks. Dr. Deborah Brix came forward to defend the method of accounting deaths due to the coronavirus in the US. He said, “The data has been transparent on what counts as a coronavirus-related death.”
Dr. Brix said both on Tuesday and Wednesday that some patients had pre-existing health conditions who died of the coronavirus infection. He added that there was a majority of such patients on the list of deaths happened due to the coronavirus. The US residents who have pre-existing health conditions are more prone to catch the virus. The virus has devastating and fatal effects on such patients.
Dr. Brix added, “We have heard both sides. We have made it clear about the comorbidities.” He said that the data gathered in Italy about the COVID-19 deaths proved it. Most of the people who died in Italy from the coronavirus infection had one or more other health issues. Dr. Brix said that the health officials and the White House coronavirus task force were working hard to understand the virus.
The health officials are finding the answers to some questions to guide people about the fatality of the virus. Dr. Brix added, “We are trying to understand the pathophysiology.” He told the media that the people having asthma, diabetes, and hypertension should stay ready for the worse. They are at a greater risk of succumbing to the virus and death due to the COVID-19 infection.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, an infectious disease expert, dismissed the criticism. He said, “I can assure you we have so much to do to protect the welfare of the American people.” He called some of the criticism the “conspiracy theories”. President Donald Trump backed the figures released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), John Hospital University, and other state health organizations. He said that the figures released by them were accurate.
