The Illinois Youth Climate Strike demonstrators demanded that the government should declare climate emergency at all levels. The demonstrators joined the environmentalists in the strike and asked the government to take action against global warming. Serena Worley, a member of the Illinois Branch of US Youth Climate Strike, said, “This movement would not have existed if the adults in power did their jobs to protect people they were elected to represent.”
The demonstrator requested the people in power to act. The protestors gathered outside the Trump International Hotel and Tower and recorded their protest on Monday. A news conference was held by the protestors in Daley Plaza. The protestors also held a die-in outside the Cook County government house and Chicago City Hall. Worley talked about the floods and heavy rains which affected the farmers statewide. Worley claimed that it was an example of climate change and global warming.
Avery Martin, a junior at Deerfield High School, said, “That is why we are fighting to change the track the world is on.” The demand of the protestors was to declare a climate emergency. They asked JB Pritzker to work on the passage of the Clean Energy Jobs Act on the state level. They also asked Lori Lightfoot, the mayor of Chicago, to declare a climate emergency in Chicago.
Martin said that they wanted to work with the adult politicians and the government. Kyra Wood, a member of the Sierra Club’s Illinois Chapter, welcomed the adult protestors. Woods said, “The crisis we are in the midst of is not just about the planet. This is about the planet and people.” She said that they were demanding actions from the government and it was the time to declare a climate emergency.
Woods urged Pritzker to take the leadership for passing the Clean Energy Jobs Act in the General Assembly later this month. Woods added, “We need you to have strong action, locally, at the state level, and federally.” Lightfoot has assured that Chicago will lead in terms of the actions taken for the betterment of the climate.
