Vehicle Emissions Testing Stations temporarily closed

Illinois EPA Director John J. Kim has announced that all vehicle emissions testing stations in Illinois will be temporarily closed. To protect the health of all Illinoisans, the EPA will temporarily suspend vehicle emissions testing, including at all centralized and decentralized inspection station locations.

The closing decision is taken to help slow the spread of COVID-19 in the United States. The closing is effective Saturday, March 21, 2020, through April 7, 2020. The suspension could be extended depending on the circumstances. The Illinois Air Team Call Center will not close and remain open to address motorist emissions testing inquiries.

The motorists can call 844-258-9071 Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM and Saturday from 7:30 AM to 1:00 PM or visit the Illinois Air Team website at http://illinoisairteam.net. to help answer any inquiry.

The Vehicle registration expirations have been extended for a month. This extension will help motorists to wait to have their vehicles tested and renew vehicle registrations. The Illinois EPA is in close contact with the Secretary of State’s Office (SOS) regarding vehicle registration extensions.

The two bodies’ communication will ensure that they are aligned in implementing their respective duties. The COVID-19 crisis will be continuously monitored by the Illinois EPA as they will rely on public health experts to help evaluate the re-opening of vehicle emissions testing stations.
