West Point Set to make a record of ‘Black Women Graduates’

In the class of 2019, West Point will see a record number of black graduate women including 34 African American ladies and 19 Hispanic women. US Military Academy will make a record in terms of Black Women graduates this spring. There were 27 African American graduates in the academy last year. 34 black women graduates will be a new record in the history of the academy.

Apart from them, 19 Hispanic women will also be present in the class of 2019 which is another record. Frank DeMaro, Spokesman of West Point, said, “We have graduated 5000 female cadets since 1980”. It was not an easy job for a woman to become a cadet in the beginning. Brig Gen Anne F. MacDonald said, “New things are always harder to tackle as females have reluctance and hesitation in their mind”. She added, “We receive a mix response from the public as a female cadet, some boost our confidence while some ignore us”.

Simone Askew, First Capt at West Point, was the first African American graduate of the academy. She graduated from the academy two years ago. This is a historic moment for the West Point to see such a huge gathering of black women graduates.

Tiffany Welch-Baker, a black graduate cadet, said, “I hope that young black girls will take a lot of motivation from these photos when they will see. They will realize the power of themselves regardless of the life presentations”. She added, “It is really an emotional thing to see a lot of cadets like me in the academy”.

The black cadets are looking ahead towards the graduation ceremony on 25th of May, 2019. Mike Pence will address the fresh graduates during the graduation ceremony. It will really be a memorable ceremony for the West Point and for the cadets as well. It is also a great gesture for the harmony and peace of the United States of America.
