Reproductive rights are everyone’s rights. These views were shared by the head of the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois on Tuesday. She said that every one person especially must possess the right of reproductive and these rights must be defended against the Trump administration and its policies.

ACLU of Illinois Executive Director Colleen Connell was speaking at the City Club of Chicago on “abortion rights and what they mean to our democracy.” She said I submit that abortion rights must be viewed as the legal equivalent of the proverbial canary in the constitutional coal mine”. She said that everyone’s rights are at risk who are not Christians.

She had argued that the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision by the U.S. Supreme Court of legalizing abortion wasn’t a fluke as it was the efforts of the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments passed in the wake of the Civil War. She said that those amendments were the essence of basic rights for everyone. She said, “explicitly ascribed the concept of due process and equal protection under the law for every person.”

Connell criticized white supremacy and white nationalism as she labeled the current Trump administration of expanding it in every field of life. “This administration has continued its unrelenting attacks on immigrants.” She also said that Trump administration is trying its best to hinder the role of colored people in the society. “Both history and current events document the symbiosis linking the crude white supremacists on the streets and many of the lawyers who call themselves ‘constitutional originalists,’ smugly suggesting that they have a monopoly on defending the true and permanent meaning of our Constitution.”

She even quoted the words of white nationalist academic F. Roger Devlin in using anti-abortion movement to promote white supremacy: “Women’s liberation has actively hurt white men’s ability to procreate, because when white women have choices they are less likely to get married, have children, and procreate the white race.”
