City of Elgin appoints Assistant Fire Chief Robert Cagann as Interim Fire Chief

Rick Kozal, the manager of the City of Elgin, announced the appointment of assistant fire chief Robert Cagann as interim fire chief. The decision came into effect immediately after the announcement. According to the announcement, Cagann will serve as interim chief until the selection of a new chief.

After his appointment as a new interim chief, he has become the leader of the 133 fire department. He will also lead emergency personnel at seven fire stations within an area of 38 square miles. The annual operating budget of $30 million has also come under his command. Cagann has a huge experience of 27 years in the Elgin Fire Department.

Cagann joined the Elgin Fire Department back in 1993 as a firefighter. He became a lieutenant in 2011, a captain in 2008, and a battalion chief in 2015. In 2017, he was promoted to the position of assistant fire chief. He took over the position of David Schmidt. He proved himself as an integral leader during that time. He helped the fire department in practicing advancements and efficiencies by using his leadership skills.

City Manager Kozal said, “I am wholly confident that the exemplary services for which the Elgin Fire Department is recognized will continue under Interim Chief Cagann’s leadership until a new fire chief is appointed.” David Schmidt has retired after serving 30 years in the Elgin Fire Department. The retirement of Schmidt gave a chance to Cagann to become interim fire chief until the new fire chief is appointed.

David retires after spending the last three years of his career as fire chief of the Elgin Fire Department. Schmidt said that he would continue his career as the Fire Chief in Carrboro, North Carolina. He will take the position on Monday, January 6.
