Illegal sports gambling charge pressed against Chicago-area man

Gregory Emmett Paloian, a 66-year-old Chicago-area man, has been charged with one count of conducting an illegal sports gambling business. According to the court documents, Paloian was allegedly involved in conducting an illegal sports gambling business in the city and suburbs.

The criminal complaint stated that Paloian had been involved in an illegal sports bookmaking business from 2015 to 2019. The criminal complaint against the Chicago-man was filed on Friday in US District Court in Chicago.

According to the complaint, Paloian operated his illegal sports gambling business in Chicago, Melrose Park, and Elmwood Park. The complaint stated that Paloian was required to pay $274,070 and a 2017 Audi automobile as a penalty for his illegal sports gambling business.

According to the court documents, Paloian will appear in court before US District Judge Joan Humphrey Lefkow on October 7, 2020, at 10:15 am. John R. Lausch, Jr., the US attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, Emmerson Buie, Jr., the special agent-in-charge of the FBI’s Chicago Field Division, and Kathy A. Enstrom, the special agent-in-charge the IRS Criminal Investigation Division’s Chicago office, announced the complaint.

Terry M. Kinney and Ankur Srivastava, the assistant US attorneys, are representing the government in the case. The public should keep in mind that a criminal complaint is not evidence of guilt. The court presumes a defendant innocent until proven guilty beyond any reasonable doubt. Upon conviction, a defendant can face a penalty of up to five years in federal prison for a gambling crime. The court is bound to follow the US sentencing guidelines and federal statuses in terms of imposing a reasonable sentence upon the conviction of a defendant.
