Sunjay Kaushal to return to Lurie Children’s Hospital to lead Cardiovascular Thoracic Surgery

After spending nine years at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Sunjay Kaushal, MD, Ph.D., will return to Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago on November 2, 2020. He will work as the division head of Cardiovascular Thoracic Surgery at the hospital. The hospital administration is ready to welcome back Dr. Kaushal.

Dr. Kaushal is an excellent researcher along with a clinical expert. In his career, he has served in several leadership roles as well. Marleta Reynolds, the surgeon-in-chief at Lurie Children’s, said, “We are thrilled to welcome back Dr. Kaushal to Lurie Children’s.” Dr. Reynolds added that the leadership skills of Dr. Kaushal would strengthen the Heart Center of Lurie Children’s.

Dr. Kaushal is an experienced surgeon and leader in the field of cardiology. He will succeed Joseph M. Forbess. Dr. Forbess has resigned from his post as he wanted to pursue other opportunities. Under the leadership of Dr. Forbess, the Heart Center of Lurie Children’s witnessed a huge growth. In 2007, Dr. Kaushal began his career at Lurie Children’s. At that time, the name of Lurie Children’s was Children’s Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Kaushal served as the Director of Cardiac Research and Director of Cardiac ECMO at Children’s Memorial Hospital before moving to the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 2011. He held several leadership positions at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He remained the Director of the Pediatric and Adult Congenital Cardiac Program, the head of Pediatric Heart Transplantation, the co-director of the Children’s Heart Program, and the Surgical Director of the ECMO Program there.

In 1995, Dr. Kaushal earned his Ph.D. in health sciences from Harvard University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. In 1997, he obtained his MD from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. He also participated in several fellowship programs in the US and the UK during his career.
