Joliet Junior College’s Music program has earned the National Association of School of Music (NASM)’s reaccreditation. In 2002, the NASM accredited JJC for the first time. JJC is part of only 31 community colleges in the country to have earned this recognition. Accredited programs are held to the highest curriculum standards, according to NASM.
Higher curriculum standards mean to create optimum learning conditions and developing the strength and quality of music in higher education. According to NASM’s website, “It establishes national standards for undergraduate and graduate degrees and other credentials for music and music-related disciplines, and provides assistance to institutions and individuals engaged in artistic, scholarly, educational and other music-related endeavors”.
“This is very important for our students,” said Charles Morgan, music program coordinator. “As they transfer on to their four-year school of choice, the transfer school knows the quality of instruction and standards the students are achieving truly are exceptional.”
Associate of Arts degree with a concentration in music or a Certificate of Completion in music technology can be earned by JJC’s Music program enrolled students. JJC’s music department is one of the best departments as it is newly renovated with a state-of-the-art computer keyboard lab, professional recording studio, a theatre, and Wenger VAE practice rooms.
Students can participate in the Concert Band, Jazz Band, Jazz Combo, Percussion Ensemble, and Guitar Ensemble and in two choirs. Morgan said, “It all comes down to doing what is best for our students. The extra work in preparing self-studies, annual reports, attending annual meetings and site visits is all worth it when we see our students succeed.”
