The Philadelphia Phillies secured a dramatic 3–2 victory over the visiting Boston Red Sox in extra innings on Monday, with an unusual finish rarely seen in Major League Baseball.
With the bases loaded and no outs in the 10th inning, Edmundo Sosa’s check swing led to a catcher’s interference call—only the second time in MLB history that such an event ended a game, according to Stathead. Carlos Narvaez, Boston’s catcher, made contact with Sosa’s bat on a 1-2 pitch, allowing the winning run to cross the plate.
Bryce Harper contributed two doubles and scored a run, helping Philadelphia snap a tough stretch in which they had lost six of nine. Jarren Duran homered for Boston, while Trevor Story and Ceddanne Rafaela each had two hits.
