Stealing Mail Charges for Postal Employee

27-year old Brittany Freeman of Johnston City, Illinois (Williamson County) has been charged with four counts of theft of mail by a postal service employee. A federal grand jury for the Southern District of Illinois returned the indictment charging Freeman.

Freeman worked as a mail carrier for the Goreville post office. She stole over $500 worth of rebate checks sent by Menards to customers along her mail routes in February and March 2020, the indictment charges.

On July 27, 2020, at 1:30 p.m., her arraignment will be held at the federal courthouse in Benton, Illinois. Each of the four felony counts is punishable by up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

She is facing these charges and not thus proved guilty. The defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty. United States Postal Service, Office of the Inspector General referred and carried the investigation. Assistant United States Attorney Peter T. Reed is investigating the case.
