United flight diverted after security scare

A United Airlines flight traveling from Chicago to New York City was diverted to Pittsburgh on Saturday after officials described a potential security concern, prompting an emergency evacuation of passengers.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, United Flight 2092 landed safely at Pittsburgh International Airport at approximately 11:45 a.m. local time after the crew reported a possible security issue. The aircraft, a Boeing 737, was carrying 159 passengers and six crew members and had departed from Chicago O’Hare International Airport en route to LaGuardia Airport.

CBS News reported that the FBI in Pittsburgh acknowledged awareness of “a reported threat” in a social media update, though authorities have not disclosed further details about the nature of the situation.

United Airlines said the diversion was carried out due to a “potential security concern” and confirmed that passengers “evacuated the aircraft via slides” after landing.

Emergency response teams quickly secured the aircraft upon arrival. A spokesperson for the Allegheny County Airport Authority said the county police bomb squad and K-9 units conducted a full sweep of the plane, ultimately reporting negative findings. Despite the extensive inspection, officials have not specified what prompted the initial alert.

Airport authorities emphasized the coordinated response, noting that “safety and security is always the top priority at Pittsburgh International Airport.” The spokesperson added that emergency personnel “responded quickly to the reported incident,” with ground crews assisting in the evacuation and transporting passengers safely to the terminal.

Officials confirmed that the evacuation was completed without incident and that “no injuries were reported” among those on board.

The airport remained fully operational throughout the event, while the FBI said its investigation into the reported threat is ongoing.
