Pixy Liao Debuts ‘Relationship Material’ in Chicago

The Art Institute of Chicago will debut Pixy Liao: Relationship Material on July 26, 2025,
offering audiences a unique look into the artist’s exploration of modern relationships. Running
through December 8, the exhibition marks Pixy Liao’s first solo presentation in Chicago and will
feature approximately 45 works.

At the heart of the exhibit is Liao’s long-running project Experimental Relationship, a
photographic series she began in 2007. Known for its ironic and humorous tone, the series
consists of self-portraits taken with her partner, Japanese artist and musician Takahiro Morooka.

Liao, who was born in China, met Morooka in Memphis, Tennessee, in 2006 while both were
studying as international students. Since then, their artistic collaboration has evolved to include
not only photography but also sculpture, video, and even a joint musical endeavor called PIMO.

“Playful and often funny, Pixy’s photographs create an arena in which she and Moro constantly
redefine what it means to be a couple,” said Yechen Zhao, assistant curator of Photography and
Media at the Art Institute of Chicago. “They prod at heteronormative conventions of power,
desire, and care in relationships, challenging viewers to imagine new ways of living together.”

The exhibition blends visual and audio media to offer a layered experience that captures the
dynamics of Liao and Morooka’s romantic and creative partnership. Sculptures and music videos
will be presented alongside photographic works, all of which examine themes like control,
fantasy, and vulnerability.

Curated by Yechen Zhao, the exhibition is made possible through the support of the Black Dog
Fund.
