Chicago Christkindlmarket Celebrates 30 Years in 2026

Chicago’s beloved Christkindlmarket will return to Daley Plaza on Friday, November 20, 2026, celebrating three decades of German-inspired holiday traditions in the city.
The annual Christmas market, located at 50 W. Washington St. in downtown Chicago, will welcome visitors daily through December 24. Admission is free, with guests able to explore festive wooden stalls offering traditional German food, handcrafted gifts, ornaments, and seasonal decorations.
Two additional Christkindlmarket locations, in Wrigleyville and Aurora, will also open November 20, expanding the holiday celebration across the Chicago area.
Christkindlmarket began in 1995 as an initiative by the German American Chamber of Commerce of the Midwest to strengthen commercial relationships between the United States and Germany.
Peter Flatzek, then the chamber’s vice president, and Ray Lotter, its manager of commercial services, worked with officials in Nuremberg, Germany, whose historic Christmas market dates to approximately 1610.
The first Chicago market opened in 1996 at Pioneer Court near the Wrigley Building. Its distinctive red-and-white striped wooden stalls featured German and Chicago-area businesses, introducing visitors to European holiday shopping traditions.
In 1997, following an invitation from then-Mayor Richard M. Daley, the market relocated to Daley Plaza, where it has remained a centerpiece of Chicago’s holiday season.
Today, Christkindlmarket is operated by German American Events, LLC, a subsidiary of the German American Chamber of Commerce of the Midwest. The event continues to feature both international merchants and local businesses.
The 2026 celebration will take place at three locations, each offering its own holiday atmosphere and schedule.
The original Christkindlmarket Chicago at Daley Plaza will operate from November 20 through December 24. Visitors can explore traditional wooden stalls in the heart of the Loop, surrounded by downtown Chicago’s seasonal attractions.
Christkindlmarket Wrigleyville, located at Gallagher Way next to Wrigley Field, returns for its eighth season. Unlike the other locations, the Wrigleyville market will remain open through December 31, allowing visitors to enjoy the festivities between Christmas and New Year’s Eve.
Christkindlmarket Aurora will celebrate its fifth season at RiverEdge Park. The suburban market will feature more than 60 vendors across an expanded event space and will operate from November 20 through December 24.
All three locations offer free admission, although food, beverages, gifts, and merchandise must be purchased separately.
The anniversary celebration follows a difficult 2025 season at Daley Plaza, when newly imposed crowd restrictions created long lines and affected vendor sales.
Chicago initially limited attendance to approximately 1,553 visitors at a time, a restriction organizers said was introduced with little advance notice.
Vendors subsequently reported sales declines of approximately 40%, while visitors faced extended waits to enter the market.
City officials later increased the attendance limit by 1,000 people. Organizers noted that the market had previously accommodated crowds of up to 5,000 visitors during its busiest periods without similar restrictions outside the pandemic.
The situation prompted discussions about potentially relocating the event in 2026. However, German American Events reaffirmed its commitment to Daley Plaza, describing the location as the market’s longtime home.
Organizers ultimately confirmed that Christkindlmarket would return to the downtown plaza for its 30th anniversary season.
Visitors to Christkindlmarket Chicago can expect a familiar selection of German-inspired holiday favorites, including bratwurst, freshly baked pretzels, and roasted nuts.
The market will also feature vendors selling handcrafted ornaments, seasonal decorations, unique gifts, and other specialty products.
To commemorate its 30th anniversary, organizers have introduced a collection of limited-edition merchandise available at all three locations.
The anniversary collection includes a pearl-white commemorative mug featuring a new flute-inspired design, a special 2026 ornament, and collectible pins.
Maren Biester Priebe, CEO and general manager of German American Events, emphasized the role these keepsakes play in visitors’ holiday traditions, noting that many families return each year to add new items to their collections.
The anniversary merchandise is expected to be a popular attraction among longtime market visitors and collectors.
Christkindlmarket Chicago at Daley Plaza will operate from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday during the 2026 season.
Friday, Saturday, and Christmas Eve hours will follow different schedules, and visitors are encouraged to confirm operating times before traveling downtown.
The Daley Plaza and Aurora markets will close on December 24, while the Wrigleyville location will continue welcoming visitors through December 31.
As Christkindlmarket celebrates its 30th anniversary, the event remains an important part of Chicago’s holiday calendar, bringing together German cultural traditions, local businesses and seasonal entertainment.
What began as a small international trade initiative in 1996 has developed into a regional holiday attraction, connecting generations of Chicago residents and visitors through food, shopping and festive experiences.
