OpenAI May Launch GPT-5 in August

OpenAI is on track to launch its next-generation artificial intelligence model, GPT-5, as early as August, according to a report by The Verge, citing sources familiar with the company’s plans.

In contrast to previous iterations, GPT-5 is expected to integrate multiple specialized models into a single, more powerful system. This update brings AI closer to functioning as a single, all-purpose system, eliminating the need to switch between separate models for different tasks.

The release was initially anticipated earlier this summer, but insiders told The Verge that the timing may still shift depending on internal testing, infrastructure readiness, and responses to competitors’ moves in the AI space. August currently remains the target date.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has previously shared that GPT-5 would be built using the company’s “o3” model and additional technologies. This approach would streamline OpenAI’s current lineup, making the user experience more seamless and ensuring more consistent performance. In the long term, the company plans to unify its O-series and GPT-series into a single framework that can tap into a wider array of tools and functionalities.

While OpenAI has yet to make an official announcement, expectations around GPT-5 are high. The model is expected to expand the capabilities of current AI technology and redefine the way humans engage with intelligent systems.

OpenAI declined to comment when contacted about the forthcoming release.
